Carmelo Mesa-Lago

Carmelo Mesa-Lago is Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh; visiting professor/researcher in 7 countries, and lecturer in 39. Author of 94 books and 318 articles/chapters published in 9 languages in 34 countries, most of them on social security and comparative economic systems (one published in Chinese in Beijing); his most recent books are Reassembling Social Security: A Survey of Pension and Healthcare Reforms in Latin America (Oxford, 2008); Re-reform of Privatized Pension Systems in the World (Max Planck Institute of Social Law and Policy, 2012) and Evaluation of 40 Years of Pension Privatization in Latin America (1980-2020):Promises and Reality (Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, 2021). Has worked as consultant in all Latin American countries and in 8 others in four continents; contributed two chapters on China (economic reform and social security) and is working on a new book: “Comparative Models and Performance of Cuban Planned Economy and Sino-Vietnamese Socialist Market: Impact on Social-Protection Systems and Financial Sustainability;” advisor to the ILO on China’s pension system; member of the US National Academy of Social Insurance and of the Board of International Social Security Review He received the ILO International Prize on Decent Work (shared with Nelson Mandela),  Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Senior Prize and 3 Senior Fulbrights,
